Some Earth Day History
Founded by U.S Senator Gaylord Nelson after witnessing the ravages of the 1969 oil spill in Santa Barbara, California, he announced the idea for a “national teach-in on the environment” to the national media alongside Pete McCloskey, and Denis Hayes. Together they built a national staff to promote events across the States.
Earth Day Today
Each year, April 22 marks the anniversary of the birth of the modern environmental movement in 1970. As more than a billion people celebrate it, it is the largest secular observance in the world that promotes changing human behavior and policy.
