Prepping Yourself for the Upcoming School Year

With the beginning of a new school year looming ahead, the back to school shopping begins. Besides new shoes, clothes, and backpacks, you will undoubtedly need to buy some new pens, paper, pencils, and so much more.

So, in preparation for all the school supplies, add filing cabinet to your list. Why? Well, as you run around getting your kids ready for the new school year, you might as well get yourself ready, too. Remember, attending school produces a lot of paper. You will need to store all those finger-paintings, spelling tests, and report cards somewhere, right?

Not a fan of bulky filing cabinets or don’t have the room? Try binders, file boxes, or magazine holders to store the influx of papers. Whatever you choose, create a file folder (or multiple) for each child. When you have done that, gather and categorize papers as they bring them home to you.

Some of these papers can include:

  • Permission slips
  • Take-home notices
  • Assignments
  • Report cards
  • Invitations
  • Keepsake papers (This is where the finger-painted comes in. Your kid is the next Picasso, we get it.)

The main goal in filing all these papers is not only to keep yourself organized, but to prevent the possibility of identity theft.

Don’t forget, identity theft isn’t just an adult problem. Identity thieves do not discriminate, which means children can be victims, too. In fact, children are the ideal candidate for scammers because it takes years to discover your child is a victim.
Why? Plain and simple, children don’t have a credit history. The lack of a credit report means it can take 10 to 15 years to spot identity theft. According to the Identity Theft Resource Center, 1.3 million children’s records are stolen every year.

So, in those passing 10 or 15 years, someone has been able to use your child’s information to take out loans and credit cards—essentially ruining your child’s credit score before they were even old enough to have their own debit card.

Remember, you are doing all of this for your kids. You wouldn’t want your child’s name, address, or SIN number getting into the hands on the wrong people.
