March is Fraud Prevention Month (#FPM2017) and here at First Stop our goal is to help you and your business stay educated and safe.

Exciting cybersecurity news for 2017!

Implementation of Mandatory Data Breach Notifications
Regulations and data breach notifications will come into effect later this year. Companies will be required to notify the public of a data breach and will face fines of up to $100,000 for non-compliance. This will require organizations to review existing policies or implement new internal processes for identifying and responding to data breaches.

Growth in Cybersecurity and Privacy Litigation
Certification and legislation regarding cybersecurity and privacy actions will continue to grow with further reliance on laws related to “inclusion upon seclusion” and “disclosure of private facts”. Therefore it is anticipated that litigation in this field will also increase.

While the government continues to work to protect us, here’s what you can do to protect yourself:

  • Don’t be lured in by valuable prizes in return for a low-cost purchase!
  • Hang up the phone, delete the email or close your Internet connection if you suspect a scam!
  • Don’t purchase a product or service online without carefully checking out the product, service and company.
  • Always request further documentation from a caller so you can verify the validity of the company and don’t disclose personal information about your finances, bank accounts, credit cards, social insurance and driver’s license numbers to any business that can’t prove it is legitimate.
  • Shred unwanted personal information such as bank statements, credit card bills, unwanted receipts, cheques, pre-approved credit applications and old tax returns.
  • Check your credit report every year and report problems immediately.
  • If a scam artist contacts you, or if you’ve been a victim of fraud: Report it!
